Exclusive interview.
25/04/2015 – Dariusz Matyja, the owner and executive director of DM Window Solutions Ltd, was interviewed by Betty Pawlusinska to find out more about his plans to expand the manufacturing of aluminium skylights.

Betty:
You have recently decided to branch out and make DM Skylight Solution a brand of its own. What were the reasons behind it?

Dariusz:
There are a number of reasons. First of all, I have been passionate about our aluminium flat roof windows from the inception of the idea to make them. A few years ago, if you were a small business, it was a very risky move to invest in a new line of products. Especially if they were being already sold by massive and well established companies on the UK’s market. It was going against the odds! However, I was convinced that we have, in a sense, so much more to offer to our clients then the obvious choice everyone was going for. Our weakness turned out to be our best asset – being small, we could guarantee that our product is of a much higher quality than other skylights made in a mass production environment with little quality control. Our dedicated team of experts pay close attention to every possible detail. In particular to how the silicone is applied, since it’s often where our rivals lose on aesthetics. Our skylights are truly bespoke. This approach paid back. Our prospective clients, who would see our products, would always choose them over what our competition has on offer.

Betty:
Wow! Your passion for DM skylights comes across really strongly. I can tell that you are proud of this product and happy to be chosen over other companies with similar products. What are the other reasons for dedicating a new, separate website just to your flat roof windows?

Dariusz:
Yes, I actually am very proud of this product! Second reason is closely linked to the one I’ve already given. Due to the fact that we were so successful in the past 5 years with our DM skylights, I strongly believe that we can go wider and start selling them on a bigger scale. We have the capacity to sell much more and I’d like to see a much higher return on the investment I initially made. It is imperative, however, that we stay faithful to our way of making DM skylights, so our clients can carry on choosing us for our excellent craftsmanship. I am planning to reconcile the extra demand with the need to keep our skylights top quality by employing more people. They are going to be trained by our existing expert team to pass the knowledge, skill and ethos. Job creation would in turn be beneficial to our local community from which I’d like to choose new employees.

Betty:
From what you’ve said I see that your company is ready for this move and everything was carefully planned and thought through. Any more reasons why you decided to expand?

Dariusz:
Absolutely! I think that the construction boom we’re experiencing right now in London and which is predicted for some time into the years to come will sustain, if not increase, the demand for modern solutions to properties. That obviously means more natural light for our buildings, extensions, etc. And that equals skylights of course. I’ve been part of the UK’s economy for the past 17 years. I wish to participate in what these exciting and promising times are bringing. After the few years of economic stagnation it is possibly the best time to think big, or at least bigger, if one is a part of construction industry.

Betty:
You seem inspired by the recent trends. Businesses supplying building industry can indeed capitalise on the current upturn. You must have seen considerable changes in the business in the turbulent times of the past almost 20 years. What are the major changes that you’ve seen?

Dariusz:
Major changes to the market were definitely brought by the recession. We were not hit immediately by the credit crunch of 2008. It took another 2 or 3 years to affect us badly. However, I’d say that in a way our company is doing really well now, because we took the best possible strategy for the tough times. We were persistent. That is exactly why we are still around and many other companies are not. We strongly believed in our products and that there are clients who are sooner or later going to buy from us if we only survive the worst. Many businesses were too impatient, gave up too quickly or didn’t have enough strength to survive the impact of the downturn. We were persistent and now we reap the rewards.

Betty:
I can clearly see that you emphasize persistence as the most important component of your success. Could you tell me about other things one must do to get the results you’ve achieved?
Dariusz:
I’d say that the business approach is crucial. We are still on the market because we are constantly fulfilling our promise to our clients that we’re providing them with a premium quality products and services in the best price on the market. We create a culture of trust and transparency.
The next element is people. I only work with exceptional individuals, whom are truly dedicated to the company’s mission. There is a strong teamwork and we support each other to constantly strive to do things better and in more efficient ways. I expect us to work closely together to grow the businesses, continue building our brand and allow us to be the national market leader we can become.
A significant part of our success is due to listening to our clients’ voices. We have always valued feedback and most of the innovations to our doors, windows and installation are a direct result of paying attention to what our clients were telling us.

Betty:
That last point is very interesting and how you attribute your success to respecting the voice of your clients. Do you think this is something other businesses are cultivating as well?
Dariusz:
I do generally think that the approach that is patronising towards customers should be the theme of the past. It is imperative that we listen and learn from our clients, their needs and wants. After all, they have the purchasing power. Thanks to adjusting our products and services to constantly changing opinions of our clients, we always improve and persistently find ways to do them even better.

Betty:
Thank you very much for that interesting answer. It sounds like a great recipe for success!
Good luck to you and the whole DM Team!
